Project 5000 well under way!
Jim Kelly, Staff Attorney for the Law Center’s Pro Bono
Project has been very busy these past few months. As the consulting attorney for
Mayor O’Malley’s Project 5000, Jim’s knowledge in the areas of law pertaining to
tax sales and receivership actions have helped to get the initiative off on the
right foot. Jim helped establish the system that the City will use to keep to
track all of these cases, developed a practice manual and is currently training
attorneys on tax sale procedures, receivership actions, clearing title and how
to maneuver this system.
Senior Staff Attorney speaks at Urban Forestry Conference in DC
Kristine Dunkerton, Esq. spoke at this national
three-day conference on Sunday, October 20th. Her presentation focused on
OROSW's (Operation ReachOut SouthWest) Vacant Land Management Strategy and the
legal issues surrounding the management of vacant land by community
organizations. This presentation included cleaning and "greening" city and
privately owned vacant land and acquiring land for sideyards.
The Community Law Center has begun to focus on
environmental justice issues facing communities in Baltimore City. Residents
face a wide range of environmental concerns from rats, lead, asbestos, air and
water pollution, as well as a lack of well-maintained open space and poor zoning
decisions that place industrial operations in residential communities. The Law
Center hopes to address these issues in a more comprehensive way in the future
to improve the quality of life in Baltimore City.
Staff Changes
Matthew Feigin joined the Law Center in
September as a Skadden Fellow. Before joining our team, Matthew worked with
voting rights litigation as a volunteer attorney at
the Brennan Center for Justice in New York City. During
his time at the Law Center, Matthew will be investigating the extension of drug
nuisance litigation to include drug problems at commercial properties,
owner-occupied properties and larger apartment complexes. He will also add his
tremendous experience to our Tenants’ Rights Initiative, focusing on flipping
and the tenant’s right of first refusal.
Tricia Bozek joined the Law Center team in
October as the paralegal for Southwest Baltimore. Previously working in
undergraduate admissions, Tricia hopes to use her strengths to reachout and help
people in her communities.
In November, there will be an exciting addition to our
legal team at the Law Center. Staff Attorney Susan Hughes will be
working with the southeast communities of Baltimore Linwood and Patterson Place.
Before becoming a lawyer, Susan worked for six years as a Baltimore City Police
Officer. Susan will be seeking to fill the shoes of former Staff Attorney
Michael Bainum, who has become the Director of Project 5000 and is now working
at Baltimore City Housing and Community Development.
