Resolving Disputes With
Your Mortgage Loan Servicer
I
nformation provided by this website is for informational purposes
only and DOES NOT serve as legal advice. Filing a complaint against a
loan servicer with a governmental agency is not a substitute for obtaining
legal representation. Do not delay in seeking assistance if you have fallen behind on your
mortgage payments or have questions or concerns about your mortgage loan
account. Many housing counseling agencies have counselors who specialize in
assisting homeowners with mortgage concerns. To find a HUD-approved housing
counselor near you, call 1-800-569-4287. Maryland residents can also call the
Maryland Center for Community Development (MCCD) Housing Hotline at
1-888-949-6677. The web site for the United States Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) provides information regarding "Your Rights and the
Responsibilities of the Mortgage Servicer."
HUD recommends that borrowers
attempt to resolve a dispute about their mortgage account by sending a
Qualified Written Request to the loan servicer.
Filing Complaints Against A Mortgage Loan Servicer
Borrowers who have unresolved disputes can file complaints with
HUD,
the
Federal Trade Commission
(FTC), Office of Thrift Supervision
(OTC) and their local state agencies.
The Community Law Center is currently serving as a Nationwide Clearinghouse
to document complaints filed with state and federal agencies concerning loan
servicers.
The Nationwide Clearinghouse page will help direct your complaints to the
appropriate agencies in your state of residence. Maryland residents see state
agencies listed below.
